about

When I was in university I became enamored with Minimalism in music, particularly the works of Steve Reich. One idea of his that stuck with me was the title of an essay of his: "Music As A Gradual Process" (www.bussigel.com/systemsforplay/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Reich_Gradual-Process.pdf).

Now although the first line of this essay clarifies "I do not mean the process of composition, but rather pieces of music that are, literally,
processes.", I think this quote applies to both the performance and composition of a piece of music. I try not to see my music as something that must be perfect, only something that I like and enjoy making. Fortunately, this also fits well with my new season of parenthood, where I don't get extended periods of time to perfect a difficult passage of music. Rather I get time in the peripherals, or the margins, to experiment and learn on the go. That is part of the reason why I set myself the goal of 'one release a month' (as per something I mentioned in my Bandcamp subscription video). My current musical journey is very, very gradual.

However, my music also seems to match Reich's idea of music being a gradual process even as it is being performed. All of the pieces here are one take recordings, a simple documentation of my learning. I have been endeavouring to understand two new pieces of software for the Playdate - Modular Play (orllewin.itch.io/modularplay) and Granular (orllewin.itch.io/granular), as well as the iPad reveb unit Rymdigare (www.humbletune.com/rymdigare/). These tracks are long because I am literally trying to learn the technology as I go, warts and all. Sometimes things don't work, and sometimes (to quote another great) there are 'happy accidents' that turn out better than if I had planned it.

And so, why release these tracks at all? As have probably mentioned before, this is simply part of my documentation of life and growth as a musician (and a father). Making this music is a way that I unwind from a long day, and it helps me journal my feelings about life. It's not always a 1:1 though (dark ≠ unhappy), but sometimes it is. I'll leave you to interpret things how you wish.

And so, this has been enough rambling. Thank you for listening as always and take care.

- Asher

P.S. I want to thank my daughter for the album art. I have been so inspired watching her ‘gradual progress’ in visual art.
