Jess and I set out to write a congregational song for our church based upon John 1:1-4 and Col 1:15-20, but I think we may have to keep trying. I am, however, happy with this piece. The lyrics have taken us a while, as we have attempted to stay true to the meaning of the passages. This song was meant to be an advent hymn discussing the coming of Jesus as the incarnation of God. Then we tried to link Colossians in also, and focus on the fact that through this small child it was God's will to reconcile 'all things' to himself: "For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross" (Colossians 1:19-20).
I hope that this piece brings you some encouragement. Enjoy!
lyrics
In the beginning, there was the Word.
There with the Father, there was the Son.
All things were made, All things were made,
Only for and through our Lord.
The light has shone, out in the dark.
The angels song, declares Him come.
All things hold together, All things hold together,
Only for and through our Lord.
In Him was life, life to the full
Grace and truth, Good news for all.
All things have their being (All things have their being),
All things have their being (All things have their being),
Only for and through our Lord.
He came to bring, God’s kingdom come.
The darkness could not, overcome.
All things reconciled (All things reconciled),
All things reconciled (All things reconciled),
Only for and through our Lord.
All things reconciled (All things reconciled),
All things reconciled (All things reconciled),
Through his life and death. Our Lord.
