about

These past few weeks my wife has been writing a sermon on the book of Proverbs, specifically Ch 31 verses 10-31. In this chapter the author speaks of ‘eshet chayil’ (e-shet-hi-yil); ‘a women of valour’ . What my wife has been learning is that the Proverb is not actually a checklist for Christian women around the world but rather a poem that Jewish husbands would memorise and recite for their wives over the Sabbath meal, praising them for their valiant acts of creativity and nurturing that bless their family. It isn’t meant to be crushing but rather championing the work women do for their loved ones and communities. So this week I thought I would try to put that part of Proverbs into the context of my own life. The final verse of the chapter puts it well:

“Honour her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate”. Prov 31:31

Now, I’m not sure where the gate is for Sydney, so I thought I’d put it here. My wife is valiant and I wanted you all to know.
Asher

lyrics

Verse 1

You are worth
Much more than precious stones
I trust in you
And through you I have grown

You rise while it’s still dark
Through rain, hail or cloud
To study, work or pray
You always make me proud

Verse 2

You care for those
Who suffer near and far
You see their needs
You don’t withhold your arm

You clothe your house;
Garments made with love
And are clothed yourself
With wisdom from above

Verse 3

Though many do these things
Truly you’re the best
May children one day
Rise to call you blessed

Let all around here know
I’ve found a valiant wife
I love you my dear
May I lay down my life
