PURE RELIGION

EJ Olsen "Pure Religion" doesn’t aim to provide any profound insights on its biblical texts; instead, it invites us to listen for God’s voice ourselves. While the musical progressions are simple enough to provide a soundtrack a listener’s meditation, they are layered and textured enough to be compelling on their own. The bonus track is an extra piece which didn't make it onto the cassette. It was written around the same time as the rest of the album. There is also a live video of 'Pure Religion'. What you see is the final take I included on the album.

about

Pure Religion is a concept album that is centred around three different passages from the Old and New Testament.

James 1:27 is a verse that I have always found startling. It goes right against all that is typically thought of as ‘religious’. It has come to my mind again and again throughout the past few years as I have been trying to wrestle with what it looks like to be a Christian in the face the many issues in the world today, such as immigration, climate change, slavery, homelessness, and trafficking.

A second part of this album is simply me wrestling with what it means to fast in a true way. Now this can mean a literal fast, or simply a considered focus on those who are in need of anything from a prison visitation, to a glass of water. Side A of the album is a musical expression of Isaiah 58:1-5, depicting our tendency to control God with perceived religious action. Side B has bright hopes for how this will be rectified, only to have even those good intentions stripped away, till only the heart of the matter is left: pure religion.

My missional community recently did an 8 week course, through REED, that explored the ways in which ordinary people can be a part of preventing women being trafficked within our local city of Vancouver. It was a pretty confronting course that has left me with a better knowledge of what causes trafficking and how we can seek working for justice in this area of society. This album was inspired by the things I learnt through this course. Please check out their work here www.embracedignity.org
