about

The recording process for 'Hereditatem Pt. I' was a relatively straightforward process. I had been working on a new batch of tape loops, of which I would try and perform daily improvised recordings. For about a month or so I would simply do take after take of these improvised sessions, keeping the ones there was some potential in, and deleting those which had none. As time went on I started to narrow my focus, and chose those tracks which I wanted to re-record and perfect. Others were chance recordings which I almost couldn't re-create later on, so they stayed on from the original demos ('Island' and 'Distance'). The final product was an album I am very happy with, and one that I think is cohesive and has a good arc.

A year and a bit later I decided to re-visit these early demos. They came to my mind as I have been getting ready to start writing and recording again. I have been attempting to gather together all the half-ideas I have stored away on external hard-drives, in order to see if there is anything worth saving; and I think these tracks are worth saving. They are a little esoteric, and may only appeal the more hardcore listeners, but I still wanted to share them. Perhaps this is just a selfish desire to 'clear the slate' before moving on, or maybe it is because I see some beauty in these tracks. I will let the listener decide.

As this release has a bit of a 'behind-the-scenes' feel, I thought I would give a brief description of each track. I have not often explained my process, and so perhaps it may be of some interest.

'Distance 「Extended Edition」' - As you may now realise, 'Distance' is simply the end section of a much larger improvised piece. The opening tape loop is actually one of my 'PURE RELIGION' tracks' 'Unto Deep'. These tapes were quite difficult to pull apart due to not having screws, but I managed to get a small snippet of the opening notes, enough to centre the piece in G-Minor.

'Dunes' - The instrument you are hearing is a 'Realistic Concertmate 400', a battery powered keyboard I found at a thrift store around 2010. The same instrument is heard throughout 'Hereditatem Pt. I' in various iterations.

'Island 「Alternate Take」' - Both 'Island' tracks are the sound of a slowed guitar performance I recorded to my National reel-to-reel. I think it is being played at a quarter speed. I re-mixed this recording to bring out the deep bass notes, trying to evoke the murky depths off the coast of my island home.

'Anamnesis' - The opening tape loop could probably be guessed: a slightly distorted recording of a toy piano. The rest is more of the Concertmate and some other tape loops.

'The Coast 「Alternate Take」' - I did a lot of different versions of this piece throughout the recording of the album. It took me a while to work out where the different builds and instruments should go. I really like this version due to some different chord choices, and the textures of the bird calls. In addition to this I attempted to use rhythms as a texture rather than a time keeper. I may have pulled it off.

Thank you again for listening. If all else fails, I hope that you find this release an interesting window into the process of writing music.
